Search Settings

Use the fields on this screen to configure the product search function to best suit the needs of your store and customers. You can create a stop list and specify the number of search results displayed per page, as well as set the colors for text and background. See below for detailed information.

Stop List

The Stop List is a list of common words that will not be indexed for product searches. Indexing common words such as "the" or "and" slows down the search and usually adds no value to the results. By not indexing certain words, the re-indexing process can be faster, the index file can be smaller, and the actual search by the user may be faster.

Add Keyword
Add a word to the stop list by entering it in the space provided and clicking Add Keyword.
Remove Keyword
To remove a word from the list, highlight the word by clicking on it, and then click Remove Keyword.
Show Words
When you publish your store, ShopSite makes a list of any words that appear more than three times in your product information. Often words that occur repeatedly are not distinctive words and are not useful in searches, and may give poor search resuults. Click Show Words to see a list of these words and optionally add them to the Stop List.
Index Numbers
Checking this box will allow numbers to be indexed for searches in your store. For example, if you have a product with a description including the phrase "24 carat gold", and you want your customers to be able search for "24", you will need to check this box. If this box is not checked, then searches with a "24" in them (such as "24 carat" or "24 carat gold") will fail because the "24" will not be found in the list of indexed search words.
Note:

This option only refers to standalone numbers. Numbers within words and hyphenated word-number combinations, such as "24-carat," will be indexed and searchable even if you do not check the Index Numbers box.

Layout Info

Make selections here to set the page layout and the color of the text and links before, after, and while they are being selected. See the Color Schemes for examples of all available colors.

Search Template
The search template controls the overall appearance of the search results page
Link Template Override
This is used to override a page's default link design, in order to allow a consistent look on the search results pages.
Product Template Override
This is used to override a product's default template in order to allow a consistent look on the search results page.
Text Color
This sets the default display of nonlink text to the color you choose. Be sure to choose a dark color (black is usually best) unless your background is dark, so the text on your site is easy to read.
Background Color
The entire background of the search results page will be displayed in the color you choose here, unless you select a Background Image, in which case the pattern will appear instead of the color. Be sure to choose a light color for the background, unless you have selected a very light color for your text.
Link Color
Unvisited links to other pages and sites will appear in the color you select here.
Visited Link Color
After a customer has clicked on a link and visited the page, the color of the link will change to the color you select here, to let customers keep track of where they've been.
Active Link Color
The color selected here will only be visible at the exact moment someone is clicking on the link. Adding a bright color here adds pizzazz.
If you have uploaded an image of a textured background to your media directory, you can use that image as a background for your site. Be careful, though, as the image will tile, meaning that it will appear multiple times as a repeating pattern, so it's a good idea to use images that were designed specifically for backgrounds. See the Image Tool help for more information on selecting an image.

Product Search Page Configuration

Set the following fields to customize the text on the search results page.

Search Field Position
Specify where the product search field should appear on a page. This setting affects every page with a product search field.
Results per page
Set the number of search results per page. For example, if a search returns 100 results, and the Results per Page field is set to 10, the customer will have access to all 100 results, but will only be able to view 10 at a time on each page.
Display Page Header and Footer
This will place your store's Page Header & Footer on the search results page.
Do you want to strip HTML tags from the product description?
Product descriptions accompany every product listed on a search results page. This setting allows you to remove all HTML tags from those descriptions. This means, for example, that a word that is italicized in a product description will appear as normal text in the search result page. Checking this box will result in a more uniform looking search result.
Maximum number of characters displayed for the product description
Product descriptions accompany every product listed on a search results page. This setting allows you to limit the length of the description, so that the overall search results page does not become exceedingly long.

Indexing Configuration

Use these fields to tell ShopSite what product fields to include in the index, and what safety factor to use when building the index.

Indexable Product Fields
Check the boxes next to the product fields that you want to have included in the index and searchable by customers.
Products saved between two checkpoints
When you Publish your store, ShopSite creates an index of products for use in searches. As it indexes products, ShopSite stops at predetermined checkpoints and records its progress so that it can pick up where it left off if a "time-out" occurs. This setting tells ShopSite how many products should be indexed between each checkpoint.
Pages saved between two checkpoints
When you Publish your store, ShopSite indexes pages for searches. As it indexes pages, ShopSite stops at predetermined checkpoints and record its progress so that it can pick up where it left off if a "time-out" occurs. This setting tells ShopSite how many pages should be indexed between each checkpoint.
Display Keywords During Full Indexing
Check this box to see a list of keywords while your store is being generated (when you click the Publish tab). Keywords are words that appear more than three times in your store and which may not be beneficial as search terms. If you enable this option, you can add those words to the stop list from the Publish Results screen. If you leave this option disabled, you can view the words and add them to the stop list from the Search Settings screen.
Count Threshold
While creating an index of words for product searches, ShopSite keeps track of how many times each word occurs. If a word appears a lot in a search index, searches for that word may return too many results to be very useful. When you publish your store, ShopSite will warn you about words that appear frequently. Enter a number here for how many times a word has to occur before ShopSite warns you about the word.
