ShopSite General Page FAQs

Here is a list of general questions and answers about pages in your store.

How many pages can I have in my store?

A ShopSite Starter store can have up to 5 pages. ShopSite Pro and ShopSite Manager stores do not have a fixed page limit.

How do I add pages to my store?

From the main back office page, click Pages and then Add a Page. If you need to add more than one page, you can save time by clicking the Add Several Pages button.

How do I remove pages from my store?

In Advanced Editing mode, select the page or pages on the List of Pages screen and click Delete Pages. You will see a confirmation screen -- click Yes to delete the pages from the ShopSite records. You must then click the Publish tab to remove the page from your store -- customers can still see the page until you Publish your changes.

In Basic Editing mode, click on the page name in the List of Pages to reach the Modify a Page screen for that page. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click Delete This Page. Click Yes on the confirmation screen and then Publish your store.

What is advanced editing? What is basic editing?

ShopSite lets you add and edit products and pages in either Basic or Advanced Editing modes. You can switch between editing modes at any time.

The screens in Basic Editing mode look just like the screens in the store setup wizard, so you don’t have to learn anything new once you’ve been through the wizard. The Basic Editing screens include onlya few necessary fields for products and pages, and you can build a good-looking simple store with just those fields.

The screens in the Advanced Editing mode give you access to all product and page fields. There is a lot of information on each screen, but you have complete control over the information in your products and pages and how they are displayed.

How do I change the first page in my store?

The first page in your store shows up in the List of Pages as your store’s name. For example, if you entered your store’s name in the Store Setup Wizard as "Al’s Tools," then you’ll see a page named "Al’s Tools" in the list of pages. When you edit that page, you are changing the first page in your store.

What do I do if I accidentally delete the first page of my store?

The first page in your store is very critical, so you should try not to delete it. If you do, however, you can recreate it from Advanced Editing mode. Click Add a Page and enter the information that you want on the first page of your store. Scroll down to the File name box and type in index.html. ShopSite (and most Web servers) expects the first page in your store to have that file name. Click Save and then click the Publish tab, and your store should have a new first page.

How do I organize the products in my store?

The organization of your products on the pages of your store is entirely up to you -- ShopSite does not force you to use any specific structure. You can even assign products to more than one page. However, if you’re asking, "How do I put my products onto pages so that they’re organized?" we can help you with that. First, create the pages that you need to orgznize your products, such as one page for each category of product or by manufacturer or however you want to do it. Then click a page name in the list of pages and click Assign Items and follow the help for that screen to put products on that page. Repeat for each page in your store, and then click the Publish tab.

Can I upload page information from a database on my computer?

Both ShopSite Pro and ShopSite Manager let you upload page information (and product information). The information must be formatted as a tab-delimited text or XML file, and most spreadsheet, database, and word processing applications can save files in at least one of those formats. You can maintain your page information in a spreadsheet or database program, then save it as a tab-delimited text or XML file, and easily upload it to your ShopSite store. You can use this method to make all page changes and updates in your store. See Database Upload/Download for more information.

Why aren’t the pages that I just added showing up in my store?

When you add a page to your store in the ShopSite back office, you have only added the information about that page -- you have not actually added a page. You must Publish your store to have ShopSite convert that information into a store page that you and your customers can see. Either click the Publish tab, or go to Utilities > Publish and click Regenerate to Publish your store.

How do I prevent search engines from indexing certain pages?

Most stores want to be found, but if you have some reason for wanting to hide a page or two, you can do it in ShopSite Pro and ShopSite Manager. Go to the Edit Page Content screen for the page that you want to hide. Scroll down to the Meta Description field. Enter this line, exactly as shown here:

"><meta name="robits" content="noindex,nofollow

Most search engines will understand this and not index the page, but this may not hide the page from all search engines.

How do I add a button/link back to the first page of my store?

On the List of Pages screen, click the name of your store’s first page, then click Edit Page Content. Scroll down on the resulting screen to the Link Location field, which should have a checkbox for each page in your store. Check the box for all pages that you want to have a lnk to the first page, then click Save Changes. Publish your store, and each checked page will have a link back to the first page.

What are custom pages?

The Custom Pages feature allows you to create some or all of the pages for your store in another application, and put links to your ShopSite databases in those pages. With this feature, you can use your HTML authoring tool-of-choice and have full control over your store's page layouts - and even use advanced features like frames - while using ShopSite's databases, shopping cart, and order processing features. See the Custom Pages help for more information.
