Screen: ShopSite > Commerce Setup > Sales Tax
ShopSite gives you three choices for collecting sales tax:
You can mark individual products as non-taxable, even when you have sales tax enabled.
Use these fields to configure sales tax for your store:
Compute sales tax on |
Select whether ShopSite should calculate sales tax on just product prices, or also on shipping and handling charges. You should consult a tax expert on this, as shipping charges may or may not be taxable, depending on where your store is located, whether you add a "handling" charge, whether your shipping rates are exact or approximate, and whether passage of title occurs before or after you ship. |
Number of tax zones to use |
Select the number of tax zones that you require for your store. If you are configuring Shopper Selected Tax, 5 zones may be enough. If you are configuring ZIP code based tax, the default number of zones is 60. |
ZIP Code-Based TaxShopSite has ZIP codes defined for all 50 states and U.S. territories, which makes it easy to set tax rates wherever you need to collect tax. You probably only need to set a rate for your state and possibly your local zip codes (if you have to collect city taxes). The "No Match" pattern will work for all other ZIP codes. |
|
Use? |
Check this box next to each ZIP code pattern that you need to enable in your store. Note that you only need to enable those patterns for which you actually define tax rates. ShopSite will use the "No Match" pattern and tax rate when a customer enters a ZIP code that you have not enabled. |
Pattern |
This field sets the patterns to match against ZIP/postal codes entered by customers. You can use a question mark (?) as a match for any final characters. For example, 8086? would match any ZIP code from 80860 to 80869, and 808?? would match any code between 80800 and 80899. If two patterns match the code entered by a customer, ShopSite will use the pattern that has the most precise match. For example, if you define one pattern as 808?? and another one as 8086? and a customer enters 80863, ShopSite will apply the tax rate defined for 8086? because it is a more precise match.
ShopSite will match 9-digit zip codes entered by customers with 5-digit patterns in this table, if you haven’t created 9-digit patterns. For example, if the customer enters 12345-6789, it will match with the pattern 123??. |
Tax Zone |
Enter the name for the tax zone that you want to appear on the shopping cart screen for the specified pattern. |
Tax |
Enter the tax rate that you want ShopSite to apply when a customer enters a ZIP/postal code that matches the pattern. |
Shopper Selected TaxIf you only need to collect tax for a few easily-identified regions, you can define those regions and rates in a simple tax table. Customers will be able to use a drop-down list on the shopping cart screen to select from those rates. The first region you define will appear first in the drop-down list, and it should be the one that you think will apply to most of your customers. Most merchants in the U.S. can provide the following simple options to their customers: Ship outside of [your state] - 0% tax
The drop-down list on the shopping cart screen for Provo, Utah might look like this: |
|
Use? |
Check this box for each region that you want to appear in the drop-down list. |
Customer Choice |
Enter text that defines the region to appear in the drop-down list. |
Tax |
Enter the tax rate for the region. |
