What is Two-factor Authentication

Two-factor Authentication is an additional method to prove you have access to your account. Two-factor Authentication (2FA) is also referred to as Two-step authentication and as Multi-factor Authentication (MFA). When activated it makes it less likely that hackers could gain access your account.

ShopSite allows you to use an Authenticator app or an emailed code as your 2FA. Of the two methods the App is the more secure option. The Authenticator app resides on your phone and displays a code that is good for about 30 - 60 seconds. In addition to entering your password, you are prompted to enter this code that only you will have access to. After 30 - 60 seconds the code will change and this new code will need to now be entered to gain access. This makes it virtually impossible for someone to attempt to guess the code.

There are a number of Authenticator apps that you could use. Once set up, they will all produce the same code needed at the time you are attempting to login. Two of the most popular apps are from Microsoft and Google and they both work on Android and iOS devices. PC Magazine has a good review of Authenticator apps.

When setting up 2FA it is a good idea to save the backup/recovery codes that ShopSite will display. Recovery codes are a one time use temporary code to use in place of the authenticator codes and should be kept secure. They are useful if you ever lose your device and need to login to reset 2FA.

An Authenticator app is not just a good idea for accessing ShopSite, many other applications support them. It is especially useful to secure your email account with 2FA since email accounts are often used when someone forgets their login information to ShopSite and most other accounts.
