ShopSite Shipping FAQs

Here is a list of questions about shipping options in your ShopSite store.

What kinds of shipping charges does ShopSite support?

ShopSite Pro and ShopSite Manager have integrated real-time UPS shipping charge calculation. All ShopSite products support calculating shipping charges by weight, by order total, several methods of flat rate shipping, and base shipping. See the shipping help for a complete list and explanations.

How do I configure ShopSite for shipping charges?

Go to the Commerce Setup > Shipping screen and select one of the ShopSite Shipping Rate Calculations, and/or UPS. Click the appropriate Configure button to set up rates and schedules. Click the help icon on the screen for more details and example configuration.

How do I configure ShopSite for both domestic and foreign shipping?

If you use UPS shipping by weight, you can select the countries that you want to ship to, and your customers will be able to choose from realtime UPS rates. For the other shipping methods, you can define one or more of the shipping methods for international use, such as "Airmail to Europe," and then define appropriate rates. (You set the names of the shipping methods in the Preferences > Store Text > Shipping screen.)

How do I configure shipping charges as a percentage of the total sale?

You cannot configure a straight percentage method for charging shipping costs, but you can use the Shipping by Currency method to come very close. On the Shipping by Currency screen, set the From and To fields for each row to be $10 or $20 apart (there are 20 rows that you can define, so you’ll need to determine what values to use to cover all possible order totals). Then set the rates for each shipping method to an amount equal to the desired percentage for that price range.

How do I stop unused shipping methods from showing up in the shopping cart?

Go to the Commerce Setup > Shipping screen. Click the Configure button for the shipping option that you are using. Uncheck the box for any shipping method that you are not using in your store.

How do I disable shipping charges? How do I make the shipping field not appear on the order form?

Select None on the Commerce Setup > Shipping screen to disable all shipping charges.

How do I configure for a base shipping charge for each item, plus a variable extra shipping charge per item?

The Base Plus shipping method charges the total of the per-product shipping charges plus a fixed amount based on the shipping method. You cannot configure a fixed per-item shipping charge and a variable per-item shipping charge.

Does ShopSite offer destination-based shipping charges?

Both ShopSite Pro and ShopSite Manager offer UPS Shipping by Weight. When UPS calculates the shipping rates for an order, the rate is based on the weight of the order (and possibly the box size) and the sending and receiving locations. You can also configure one of the other shipping options such that the names of the shipping methods represent destinations, such as "CA, OR, WA, NV, AZ."

How do I add an extra charge for shipping to P.O. boxes?

You can use the surcharge feature in ShopSite Pro to add an extra charge for unusual shipping situations.

How do I configure flat-rate tax and shipping, such as $20 for tax and shipping?

Configure the Flat Shipping table with the amounts that you want to charge. You’ll probably also want to go to Preferences > Store Text > Shopping Cart to change the "Shipping" text that appears on the shopping cart page.

How do I change the default shipping names ("shipping 3", "shipping 4", etc.)?

The names of the shipping methods are set in the Preferences > Store Text > Shipping screen.

How do I offer free shipping on orders over a certain total?

In ShopSite Pro and ShopSite Manager stores, go to the Commerce Setup > Shipping screen and use the fields at the bottom to configure free shipping. You can set a minimum order amount required to qualify for free shipping, and you can limit free shipping to certain countries and exclude certain ZIP codes.

For ShopSite Starter stores, configure your store to use the Shipping by Currency option. In the shipping table, set the row for the highest dollar amount to have no charges.

How do I charge for shipping weights in kilograms instead of pounds?

ShopSite does not use a specific unit of measure when calculating Simple Shipping by Weight, but you must use the same unit for all products in your store. You can define the Simple Shipping by Weight rate table based on either pounds or kilograms -- whatever your shipper requires.

How do I not charge shipping on some items?

In some ShopSite products, you can click the No Shipping Charge box when adding a new product or editing the product info. If you are using Shipping by Weight, you can set a product’s weight to 0 (zero).

How do I add a handling charge?

ShopSite Pro and ShopSite Manager let you add handling charges to orders in addition to shipping charges. You can define a simple formula, or one based on other costs in the order, such as 10% of the shipping charge. See the Shipping help for more information.

Can I add handling charges for specific items?

ShopSite Pro and ShopSite Manager let you add extra handling charges for any products, in addition to order-based handling charges and shipping charges. See the Edit Product Info help for more information.

Do I have to enter shipping box dimensions?

Some UPS shipping methods require shipping box dimensions as well as weight to calculate shipping costs. Other shipping methods do not need box dimensions. See the Shipping help for more information.

Can I lower the shipping rate based on the quantity ordered?

You cannot change a shipping rate for a specific product based on the quantity ordered. However, you can define your shipping rate table to give a better rate for higher total order costs.

How do I give customers an option to add shipping insurance?

If you have ShopSite Pro, you can use the surcharge field to offer insurance and other shipping options. If you do not have ShopSite Pro, you can define and name shipping methods both with and without insurance and let the customer choose.
